Inbound Marketing Tips and Tricks

What is Inbound Marketing ?

If you search in google for "What is Inbound Marketing", the first result will be of Wikipedia saying -
Inbound marketing is advertising a company through blogs, podcasts, video, eBooks, enewsletters, white papers, SEO, social media marketing, and other forms of content marketing.
I think inbound marketing is more than just advertising and is also about approach and processes involved in shaping your digital marketing and brand building life cycle.

So a better definition could be
- Inbound Marketing is set of marketing processes life cycle through which your customer finds you and make an informed decision rather than you doing the hard selling and convincing.

Some of the ways which Wikipedia listed as part of inbound marketing are blogs, podcasts, video, eBooks, newsletters, white papers, SEO, social media marketing etc which is just a small part of it. I have covered some more such ways of content marketing at my blog post 23 ways of content marketing. Again, this is just a small part of the whole picture as it should not just be about your potential customer finding you but you also want to convert this "visit" to a lead and then eventually as customer.

So you can convert inbound marketing into 4 parts

  1. Visibility and Attracting potential customer - Content Marketing, Personal Branding, Brand Awareness, Domain Awareness
  2. Lead Capturing - Capturing user data through squeeze pages
  3. Funneling and Drip Marketing - Segmenting the leads and following up the leads through mail.
  4. Final Sale
Most of the people makes the mistake of just focussing on #1 as that is the most visible and easily seen part. People uses Google analytics or Awstats, see the search engine hits/page views and make their decision on the basis of that instead of looking at the whole sales funnel.

Inbound marketing really is not something new as it going on since the early days of the Internet but with customers getting flooded with ppc ads and cold calls, the ROI on outbound marketing is diminishing and hence so much focus on inbound methods.

Does Inbound Marketing suit your needs ?

Inbound Marketing is something which takes time and unlike PPC campaigns, can not be fully automated so you while making your marketing strategy, you do want to have a mixture of everything to find the optimum solutions for you.
